Shri Walkeshwar Temple

"One of the most oldest and beautiful places in Mumbai.
The Temple is located in Walkeswar, an affluent area of the Posh South Mumbai. Valuka Iswar in Sanskrit is Idol made of Sand and hence the name Sri Walkeswar. The Presiding Deity here is God Shiva. The locals call it Baan Ganga Temple since its close to Baan Ganga Tank. Sri Rama is set to have stayed here while visiting Sri Lanka in search of Goddess Seetha. Sri Rama then is said to have made a Shivalinga of Sand and Prayed to God Shiva. Sri Rama is believed to have shot an arrow (Bana) to fetch fresh water for His thirst. The Temple was built in the year 1127 AD by Lakshman Prabhu. The Portuguese while ruling over Mumbai in the 16th Century damaged the Temple heavily. A Mumbai based Philanthropist Rama Kamath rebuilt the Temple in the year 1715. Due to its architectural beauty the Temple has gained a Heritage Status. Full Moon and New Moon Days draws a huge number of Devotees. The Temple is currently the site of Hindustan Classic Music Festival. This Temple attracts a large number of Tourists on weekends due to its strategic location. In the 16th and 17th Centuries this Temple was raided by Malabar Pirates and its properties looted. The Temple gains importance due to its location in a Posh Area close to Baana Ganga Tank.
